Between 2005 and 2008
We had Mrs. Maina,
Then came Mr. Kiuna,
Mr. Kang’ethe followed,
And Ms. Kariuki closed that chapter.
At Lari Secondary,
They stood before us,
Each day singing Literature—
Literature many didn’t love.
After their lessons, they'd leave,
Some of us thrilled,
Others unmoved.
But they had done their work.
I thought it was all for exams,
But it was for the life ahead.
Since I was their favorite,
They gave me books,
Books my classmates never saw.
When they handed me
An Oxford idioms dictionary,
A big Oxford dictionary,
And a collection of Kimenye’s Moses series,
I didn’t know they were planting a seed in me.
Now, almost two decades later,
That seed has sprouted,
And poetry and stories,
Are blossoming from within me.
