Have you noted there are changes in employment as far as academic qualifications are concerned? Days gone employers were looking for university graduates but the trend has changed. Having a degree nowadays is one way of missing job opportunities. The available jobs are favoring certificate and diploma holders.
If you go through the jobs the government advertises on its website (PSC) you will find that more of the jobs on offer do not require degree holders. Take an example of health care jobs that have been advertised from the onset of COVID19, very few of them if any prioritizes people with nursing degrees and MBChBs. Many of the holders of these degrees are in private hospitals or private practice where they are earning peanuts. The government is recruiting certificate and diploma holders.
Another area of interest is media. A careful look on it you will find many of the presenters are certificate, diploma and talents in work. The communication and media degree holders are nowhere to be seen and yet our universities are admitting students. Where will they go after school?
The pride of university education is long gone. If the courses offered are overtaken by certificates, diplomas and talents then pursuing them is a waste of time. I have a degree myself and I am not discouraging people from pursuing them, but these degrees are a road block to many people.
If a job is on offer and a degree, diploma and certificate holders are invited for an interview, the probability of a certificate holder getting that job is higher than the rest. For example, in terms of basic pay expectation a degree holder will talk of a figure above 50,000/=, a diploma holder will request 30,000/= and a certificate will mostly be around 20,000/=. Now, if the job needs nursing or media education, what will a degree or diploma holder in the field do that a certificate holder in the same field cannot do?
As the education goes higher it becomes irrelevant to the needs of common people. Of late I saw a lady carrying a placard requesting for anyone with a job. The lady claimed to have a diploma in IT but the jobs she was searching are secretarial in nature. Why was she not looking for programming, website design, network admin and so forth jobs in IT? It is because the education she learnt was majorly theoretical without application. That is how so many degrees and diplomas are! They do not offer any skill.
When you see people declining university offers and opting for diplomas and certificates they are guided by the right people who know what is happening. It is better to have a certificate that has practical skills than a degree or a diploma that is full of theoretical concepts.
