KUCCPS: Mistakes Students Make During the First Selection of Courses

The good news is that KUCCPS has opened their portal to enable the last KCSE students to choose courses they would like to pursue in the university. The portal will close on 10th next month. Here are the basic and important things that those who will be choosing courses need to know. If one does not choose courses well on the first round, he or she may end up in a course full of frustrations as I wrote on the previous article.

The number one mistake students make is choosing a course that has equal cut off points of say 2019 with their current cluster points. The fact is competitive courses cut off point oscillates but chances of going up is high. For example, in 2018 University of Embu had a law intake with 22.8 cut-off points, the 2019 KCSE students who had cluster points around 23 applied for this course in good numbers hoping they will qualify for this course. Unfortunately, in 2019 the cut off points rose to 34.9. My point is when one is choosing a course the cluster points should be more than the previous cut off points with a margin of around 3 to 5. For instance, for who will be choosing the same course at Embu need to have a cluster point of around 38 to 40.

The second mistake student make is choosing Nairobi, Moi, Maseno, KU and JKUAT, and ignoring other universities. Due to the demand of courses in these old universities, their cut off points are always higher than in other universities. It is very possible to miss a good course in these old universities but get it in the new universities. One thing that stands out after school no one is asked which university he or she schooled. What counts is what one can do. My advice is during the first selection which is now in the process, those who are choosing courses let them consider upcoming universities if the cluster points are below 40 for a good course.

The third mistake students make during course selection is choosing universities within towns where the cost of living is too high and yet they know they are not good financially. If one hails from a humble background he or she should consider universities in rural areas. The truth is university life is tough if one has no money and it can turn one to a beggar. To curb stress that emanate from cost of living one should be wise and think of going in rural areas like Laikipia, Rongo, Kisii, Chuka and other rural universities.
