Requirements for Registration as a Teacher by TSC

If you are in college and you are pursuing a course in education or you would like to become a teacher this is what you need to know.

TSC is mandated to register qualified persons as teachers and review the standards of education and training of persons entering the teaching service.

Requirements for Registration as a Teacher by TSC

1. Certificate of Good Conduct (Police clearance certificate).

2. Relevant academic and professional certificates from recognized institutions.

These includes;

1) Primary school leaving certificate and KCPE certificate.

2) Secondary school leaving certificate and KCSE certificate.

3) College or university certificate and transcripts. (For college applicant leaving certificate is attached)

3. A copy of Identity Card or Passport

4. Passport photo

5. KRA Pin Certificate

6. Dully filled GP69 Medical Form

7. Payment of registration fee.

Note

1) The application is done online on www.teachersonline.go.ke

2) Before the above documents are uploaded online one must take their photocopies and originals at the nearest TSC office for certification.

3) Payment can be made using Mpesa or National bank.

4) Upon the receipt of the application, the Commission vets the documents and the applicant is given response / decision within 30 (thirty days).

5) If the application is successful, the applicant is issued with a Registration Certificate that bears TSC number.

6) TSC publishes names of persons dully registered as teachers periodically on Kenya Gazette and on TSC website.

7) If names differs a sworn affidavit is a must.

TSC Minimum Academic and Professional Requirements to be registered as teacher.

1. ECDE teacher

With Certificate
  • Minimum of CPE/KCPE plus ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Minimum mean grade D+(plus) at KCSE and ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Minimum mean grade D (plain) at KCSE, KNEC proficiency certificate, ECDE Certificate from KNEC diploma.
With Diploma
  • Mean grade C Plain at KCSE and ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Mean grade C+ (plus) and above for University Diploma.
With Degree
  • Mean grade C+ and above
2. With PTE
  • Minimum grade C Plain in KCSE and above.
  • PTE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Mean grade of C-(minus) for visually and hearing impaired persons
3. With Diploma in Education
  • Minimum grade C Plus in KCSE and above and C+ (plus) in the two subjects of specialization.
  • Minimum grade C Plain in KCSE and above.
  • At least C plain in English
  • C (plain) in Mathematics for Science based courses
  • D+ (plus) in Mathematics in non-science based courses
4. With Diploma in Education for visually and hearing impaired.
  • Minimum grade C Plain in KCSE and above.
  • At least C minus in English
  • C (minus) in Mathematics for Science based courses
  • D (plain) in Mathematics in non-science based courses
5. With Bachelor of Education
  • Minimum mean grade C+ (plus) and above or its equivalent.
  • C+ (plus) in two subjects of specialization
6. With Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science
  • Minimum grade C Plus in KCSE and above and C+ (plus) in the two subjects’ specialization.
  • Post graduate diploma in Education (PGDE).
TSC can decline to register a person as a teacher due to;

1. Does not possess the prescribed qualifications.

2. is not of good moral character

3. has been convicted of a sexual offence or an offence committed against a learner

4. has been convicted of a criminal offence which in the opinion of the Commission, renders the person unfit to be teacher

5. is engaged in any activities which in the opinion of the Commission, are prejudicial to peace, good order or good government in Kenya

6. Suffers from such physical or mental infirmity which in the opinion of a registered medical practitioner renders the person incapable of performing the duties of a teacher.
