Introduction
Leadership is a demanding role since a leader is expected to be self-aware and to know about the others around him. self-knowledge is important for business leaders to allow them to recognize and understand emotions and their effect on others as they happen. This paper is going to explore my individual leadership profile by looking reflecting on leadership experiences and the impact they have had on my leadership, my key strengths, and essential rules of leadership as they pertain to leadership development, as well as the aspects of emotional intelligence on the strengths and how to master my style of leadership.
Leadership Experiences
In this section, I will highlight on my leadership aspects of my most recent professional role and two key experiences that have impacted me as a leader.
Leadership Aspects of Current Role
The leadership aspects of my current role entails giving directions and tutoring in my health and wellness training center. i mentor my two employees on how we can grow the organization together from one height to another. I also interact with customers to understand their motivations, their reception to our services, their level of satisfaction and what they would like to see improved in our services. From a general perspective, I am a leader at home where I am in charge of the runningthe family, overseeing the house manager, the children and the overall affairs that entails a household.
Key Leadership Experiences
Leadership brings various experiences and each day brings with it new experiences. One of the experience that has impacted me as a leader is when the employee decided to leave in the middle of the day when my schedule was so tight. It happened that the worker wanted permission to go out, but I told her to wait till the following day. She did not want to wait and decided to quit. She was in the middle of her daily routines when she gave me the ‘surprise.’ I had to look for an alternative as soon as possible to ensure that the work would be complete. Another experience that has impacted me as a leader was when a customer got angry at our health and wellness center causing drama that nearly brought about the other customers to stop training. I had to step in and calm the customer down and made him get back to working out. These experiences taught me the importance of self-awareness and social skill aspects of emotional intelligence.
Leadership Strengths
Jack welch gives foundational principles that are important for leadership. these values are candor, mission and values, differentiation, as well as voice and dignity that are considered as winning strategies for leadership.
Two Key Strengths
Jack welch gives eight principles that leaders should cultivate and make them their strengths. A leader should upgrade his team, instill the company’s vision, exude positive energy and optimism, as well as establish trust with candor, transparency and credit. A leader should also make unpopular decisions and gut calls, probe and push the team, reward risk, and finally celebrate (Welch, 1). My two key strengths are instilling the company’s vision and establishing trust with candor, transparency and credit. These strengths are in line with my disc profile results that show that the priorities that shape my workplace experience are maintaining stability and giving support. One of the strength I know and passionate about is the strong need for harmony in relationships. I tend to be considerate of other people’s needs. I am unlikely to display anger or impatience, which makes people feel comfortable asking for help. Apart from giving support, I like ensuring accuracy where I am detail-oriented and precise to ensure accuracy and ensure I give reliable outcomes. These strengths complement each other in that being open and honest helps me to ensure accuracy (Mitchell, 7). If something is not right or not going as I would like to, I always talk openly and candidly to let the other person understand my expectations. i make unpopular decisions, especially when it comes to dealing with staff. Sometimes people tell me that I am too lenient on staff, but I decide to make the unpopular decision that many people would not give a second chance.
Emotional Intelligence and Disc Profile
The strengths and princiles identified above relate to the disc profile and emotional intelligence. This section will explore the asppects of my emotional intelligence and the insights from the disc profile.
Emotional Intelligence
From my emotional intelligence skills, empathy and social skill are the two elements of leadership that have helped shape my leadership experiences (Goleman, 2). I am empathetic and always walking in the shoes of another person, which makes me to make unpopular decisions. Even in the face of adversity and disappointment with a member of staff, I try to be as empathetic as possible. I strive to see the best in the staff, and even if there are a hundred reasons to give up on the staff, I look for one reason to make the staff stay. As a result of being empathetic, I have reinforced my social skill, and thus connect easily with other people.
The areas I need to improve for my emotional intelligence are self awareness where I need to know and manage my anger and self regulation so that I do not give up part of my happiness and social being for the sake of maintaining my social skills (Brown, 7). This arching reality is reflected in the disc assessment where the desire to give support makes me put my personal needs aside to give the support that is needed. The disc assessemtn profile highlighted that I need to take action and be firm and stand my ground ground as it may be hard to take a firm stance when I feel pressured to take a different direction.
Leadership Skill Development
In this section, I will address a plan to master my leadership by identifying 3 leadership skills that I would like to master in the future, and the steps I can take to master these skills.
Leadership Skills to Develop
There are multiple leadership styles, and each style has its merits and drawbacks. My leadership style is democratic, affiliative and diplomatic. The skills I would like to improve are networking skills, coercive leadership skills and exuding positive energy and optimism. I would need to develop networking skills because I am a C person in the disc assement, and very reserved (Brown, 7). The power of networking in the present times cannot be underscored, which calls on me to get out of my comfort zone and network. As for the coercive style, I need to do more probing and pushing for a turnaround for rapid results. Being too diplomatic may sometimes make employees lenient and experience a leadership gap.
Conclusion
Leadership skills and self knowledge are very important for leader. If one does not know to lead himself/herself, how can he lead others. As such, it becomes pertinent for a leader to be aware of his emotional intelligence to help him live in harmony with his self and the team he is leading. My leadership strengths are empathy and social skills whereby I cherish relationships and working in harmony. Nonetheless, I need value the power of networking, standing my grounds and push and probe as means of growing my leadership skills.
