North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

Pat Buchanan and Ralph Nader have been opposing creation of the free trade area for different reasons, but also they agree on some reasons. The two activists have been against NAFTA formation from inception. The two agree that NAFTA will create more challenges to the U.S. than its advantages.

One they argue NAFTA has transferred jobs to Mexico. This includes manufacturing which Buchanan believes like Alexander Hamilton, founding father of America, determines the freedom of the Americans. By relocating manufacturing plants to Mexico where there is cheap labor, the two believes U.S. is losing its sovereignty.

How can Americans who earn more than Mexican be made to compete equally? By giving firms an opportunity to choose where to source labor, it means thousands of Americans will have to lose their jobs.

Buchanan and Nader finds a common ground in that the government that supports NAFTA is valuing corporations than its people. Firms are given an opportunity to flourish but citizens are not given an opportunity to grow economically.

Nader on his part argues that the NAFTA laws supersede the domestic laws of nations concerned. This exposes nations like U.S. to issues like environmental degradation and poor working conditions but it has no power to stop it.

Nader further links illegal immigrations to NAFTA. By allowing Mexicans to have access to 20 miles away from the border makes them smuggle goods, drugs across the borders. This creates a domestic security challenge.
