Web Browsers and Internet Searching

A web browser is an application software that allows users to access the web and interact with various websites.

Since web browser is a software it must be installed on a device (e.g. computer, smartphone, etc.).

Examples of web browsers are; Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc.

Functions of Web browsers

1. Let’s you navigate the internet

2. let’s you interact with websites

3. let’s you download or upload information

Web browser tabs allow you to open more than one website in a browser window at the same time, so that you can easily move back and forth between webpages.

Search sites are special websites that use search engines to help you locate what you are looking for on the internet. For example, Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

Search engines are the software programs that make search sites work.

Search engines sort through the vast amounts of information in databases connected to the internet to produce a list of results that align with the search terms used.

Search engines typically rank results by popularity, date updated or other measures. However, different search engines use different methods for ordering their results.

Search engines do not evaluate the credibility or trustworthiness of sources in the search results. Determining credibility is the user’s responsibility.

Effective internet Searching Strategies

1. Entering specific search terms or keywords; Keywords should represent the most important terms in your search topic, allowing the search engines to find results that contain those terms.

2. Include quotation marks; putting quotation marks around your search terms will make the search engine look for your exact phrase—those exact words in that exact order.

3. Use neutral phrasing.
