Voluntary and involuntary actions

The concept of free will is important in choosing how to act when presented with alternatives. The choice people make in most situations depends on several factors like prevailing circumstances and self-interests. In this paper I will look on the voluntary and involuntary actions and what makes them distinct.

Aristotle method entails breaking down of ideas in order to analyze them in details to make informed decisions. In this case of free will Aristotle broke down the issue of voluntary and involuntary actions in order to reach to a conclusion of which actions are voluntary and which are not, and the circumstances that surrounds those actions. The actions of men make them earn praise or blame, receive rewards or punishment, and therefore it is necessary to know whether those actions are voluntary or involuntary and which situations or circumstances surround them so as justice to prevail.

Consider the case of Chinese fishers who were kidnapped at Gabonese port and kidnapper’s latter demanded a ransom to release them (Aljazeera News, 2021). If the Chinese were threatened to either surrender or die during the kidnap, perhaps they chose to surrender and save their lives. Such an action is voluntary. This is because they knew why they made that choice. That is, they were doing it to remain alive. Also, the kidnappers action was voluntary as they knew why they were acting that way. An action is voluntary when one is in the know of the outcome.

Another case of interest is the Francois Momulu sexual misconduct case, Momulu was accused of rape in Minnesota Supreme Court. Momulu was not caught on the wrong side of the law as the woman was said to be under the influence of alcohol which she had taken before meeting him (CBS NEWS, 2021). Rape according to that court of law was voluntary if the victim had taken the alcohol on her own before the act occurred. Therefore, an act is involuntary if the victim is given alcohol by the victimizer.

I think the idea of voluntary and involuntary acts is important in getting the real criminals. Many are the times innocent people are made by law enforcers and judicial system to suffer for no valid reasons. What would happen if the victims of human trafficking are forced to act in a way that is against the law? For instance, if a trafficked person is forced to act as a bomber, engage in illicit sexual activity or transport drugs and other items that are a threat to homeland security, such a person if caught by the law enforcers may be regarded as a terrorist but the fact is he or she was under influence by an external force. And failure to obey that external force could add sorrow to his or her life.

The case of U.S marine member, Mario Madera, is a good example of a lawsuit that is neither voluntary nor involuntary (FINLEY B, 2021). Mario was accused with his colleagues on conspiring to kill one of their colleague, Logan Melgar, while in a mission in the nation of Mali. But, the defendant said Mario played a minor role in the process and that he was only helping the victim to revive after being on the chokehold. Though, the act was a prank the court ruled that Mario was aware of the dangers of placing a person in chokehold. But, the house of the victim was found being broken in perhaps by extremists who the victim and the accused had gone to help the Mali troops to fight.

In conclusion, voluntary acts are carried out by individuals with clear understanding of what the outcome will be, and involuntary acts have various factors that needs to be considered. Whereas voluntary acts are easy to identify involuntary acts need to be looked on keenly.
