Changes in Eastern Europe

The Soviet Union declared it will not support communist governments in Europe. This made the communist government influence in East German to wane and bow to pressure of much needed reforms that was sweeping across Eastern Europe. When Hungry allowed free entry of citizens from other nations to its territory, citizens of East Germany left their nation and went to West German. As forces within both East and West German governments and societies were advocating for a unified Germany, the nations that had formed West German were more scared of what will be born with unified German. They thought the pains Germany had inflicted on them during the World Wars might be repeated again if Germany re-united and regained its security strength. To keep the united nation on checks the U.S was given a role of ensuring the new united nation does not pursue expansionist goal and it respects the Poland borders (U.S. Department of State, 2009).

Unified Germany Benefits to the U.S.

The United States got a strong ally from German unification. Germany is the leading ally of the United States in Europe. The two nations are members of international bodies like G-7, G-20, NATO, among others. The nation has more than 40 million citizens of Germany origin living in the United States (U.S. Department of State, 2021).

Germany is the third largest world exporter. As an ally of German the nation enjoys good bilateral trade relations. This includes a ready market for exports and a continuous supply of goods and services. For example, in the 2019 financial year United States exported goods and services worth $96.7 billion to German and imported goods and services worth $162.9 billion. The U.S investors in Germany also enjoys taxation based on agreed protocol where double taxation is eliminated (U.S. Department of State, 2021).

The United States role in Korea’s conflict

The United States hand on the current Korea conflict cannot be ignored. The goal of the United States has been to contain the spread of communism. This started in Europe and spread to Asia. The U.S initially used measures such as Berlin Airlift, the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine to help nations that were enemies of the USSR (National Archives, 2021). The United States has been using the Korea conflict to communicate that communism is a threat of democracy. But, why did United States forces cross the 38th parallel?

The importance of the United States in Korea re-unification

The U.S. has a greater role to play if Korea will ever unite. One, the U.S helps South Korea which is not allied to communism. Two, although U.S. shares membership of international bodies with North Korea like UN their relationship is not good. This means the U.S must first foster a good relationship with North Korea. Three, the U.S relationship with China and Russia has been improving and thus, if U.S. gets involved in Korea unification in a biased way, the two nations may throw their weight on North Korea and break their relationship with U.S (U.S. Department of State, 2018).
