Critical Infrastructure Protection: Government Facilities

Critical Infrastructure protection (CIP) is a major role of American security agencies. This is because destruction or disruption of critical infrastructure can result to security and economic sabotage. In this case assignment I will look on how Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the General Services Administration (GSA) ensures the government facilities are secure.

Government facilities includes buildings that house Federal, State, Local, Tribal and Territorial government assets and employees locally and internationally. These facilities are important because it is through them American citizens and visitors are able to access government services. This makes these facilities to be vulnerable to both physical and cyber-attacks (DHS, n.d.).

Foreign nations that are not allies of the United States and terrorists target government facilities where they can obtain, compromise or destroy information on government operations. These parties aim is to deny the Americans services they deserve, compromise national security and expose government plans. For example, of late China and Russia have been exposed by the FBI as nations that spy the United States (Giglio, 2019). The terrorists also want to destroy these buildings and assets they contain, as well as kill the government employees.

Protection of government facilities is important to the American people. Think of America without government offices. Where will the citizens get services from? How will the citizens travel overseas safely? How will the government run? How will the low of commerce and people be regulated? This makes government facilities a priority in the DHS.
