Civil rights are fundamental guarantees that a government will treat all people equally, in particular, groups of people who have been denied these rights in the past. The proclamation of Independence starts that, “all men are created equal” and the Fifth Amendment outlines that the government will treat all citizens equally. But, is this fundamental right served equally?
Of late, United States have faced criticism of racial injustice especially in regard to the Blacks. The government has not been able offer equal treatment to all people. The Blacks have suffered racial discrimination from time immemorial in America. Despite, all the legislations in place the Blacks remains a target of racial injustice. To make matter worse, the Federal security agencies like police have been involved to discriminate the citizens they are supposed to ensure are safe (Leonhardt, 2021).
The killing of George Floyd was termed as police brutality, but, it was about racial injustice. The killing of Ahmaud Arbery was regarded as lawless figures killing a young man, but, it was a racial injustice. The criminal justice is not served equally in the United States (Kennedy, 2021). What if the Blacks are the ones killing the Whites? Can it be termed as lawlessness? Can the White jury withdraw themselves as they are doing in cases where the Blacks are the Victim? Can Whites accept to be tried in a jury with 10 Blacks and 1 White judge?
Racial injustice has made “Black Lives Matter” to be a common name across the nation. But, are the cases brought to limelight solving the problem? It seems the government is not interested in racial injustice and is finding solace in other quarters that satisfies its craving or its burying its head in the sand. This has made the White Supremacists to continue killing the Blacks. At the same time the FBI and the police are spying the Black Lives Matters activists every day and not the killers (Aljazeera, 2017).
Does it mean Blacks are America citizens? Ahmaud Arbery was shot in his residential area which is majorly of Whites. Does that mean the Whites want to scare away other races? Are there residential areas reserved for the Whites only? The government need to address the issue of racial injustice before it gets out hand (Kennedy, 2021).
The Black Lives Matters protests may be seen as provoking violence but the activists want the issue to capture attention. In history, there is nothing like peaceful demonstration, there must be drama (Sebastian, 2015). But, is the police supposed to respond using 1960 protests response tactics? Are the police bullets, police dog’s attacks, pepper fire hoses and other extreme tactics a solution?
