Stockholm syndrome

I think the idea of Stockholm syndrome is voluntary. Once, a person is in the hands of captors he or she can agree to do what the captors want. But the duration one takes before taking the acts of captors as kindness and starting to live as them matters. How can one turn to be like captors within two months? Does it mean his or her virtues can be compromised such fast?

When one is being kidnapped due to fear and threat of physical harm, how a person acts can be involuntary. But, after staying with captors for days without physical harm how a captive act is voluntary. For example, if a lady is abducted and she is forced to have sex within minutes after abduction, if she yields to the demands of the abductors that are coupled with threats and physical abuses the act is involuntary. But, if the lady stays with the abductors for days and then yields to their sexual demands without being forced then the action is voluntary, as it is a choice.

When the cases like of Patty Hearst occur what the captives do after several days with captors it is done out of free will. It can appear as if the captives are brainwashed but it is not (History.com Editors, 2021). Why do the captives fail to sneak when they reach where security forces are on sight? That means, they are acting out of free will. For instance, how did Patty Hearst manage to move around the country, committing crimes without surrendering to security authorities? I do not think one can enter into a bank or a store where there is a good number of people and fail to shout for help in their midst. Does it mean Patty was carried to a bank under duress without people noting she was in danger?

What would happen if the law declares captive action as involuntary? I think the move will make the crime rate to skyrocket as captives will act without fear. Though, the fear of being haunted may compel the captives to remain with the captors, I think the captives are also lured to live the life of captors and therefore their actions are voluntary. The thought of pleasing the captors in order to avoid being tortured and abuses is also a choice that makes captives acts voluntary.

In conclusion, the actions of captives are involuntary if done under compulsion. If the captives have chosen to please the captors, then the act is voluntary. How the captives behave in order to protect themselves and their interest is voluntary though done while in the hands of the captors.
