The Covid-19 pandemic, its containment and vaccination issues is a topic that made Republicans and Democrats to have a different perspective during the campaigns and election. The topic is relevant to date as both parties are still torn because of vaccination and emergence of new covid-19 variants (PARKS, 2022). On the onset of the outbreak former President Trump, a Republican, was not for the idea of Federal government taking charge of containing the pandemic. Instead, he left the responsibility to the states that were not capable of handling a pandemic of such a magnitude.
On the other hand, the Democrats argued that their candidate, the current president, Joe Biden, was prepared to handle the pandemic. The Virus and Trump distancing himself with the pandemic became the campaign tools of Biden. Each day Biden would remind Americans the number of deaths that the virus claimed that was more than two hundred thousand (Chaggaris, 2020).
Trump oversaw the development of vaccines but did not mandate Americans to be vaccinated as Biden is doing today. Trump seemed to respect individual’s liberties. But, that worked to his and Republican disadvantage. But, as the pandemic became more serious, Trump having lost the election bowed to vaccine and encouraged more people to be vaccinated. But, he still left the choice to be vaccinated to the individuals (MONTANARO, 2022).
The presence of two political parties with divergent views has made the United States to be hit hardly by the Covid-19 pandemic. The regions that lean on the Republican party were hardly hit because the citizens listened to their political leaders. They failed to listen to health experts advise of averting the situation as the topic was politicized (Albrecht, 2022). The nation need to build trust and confidence in science and health experts. Also, more political parties should be empowered to have a controlling force. This is because more political parties can join forces that can work in favor of the nation.
