Computer packages are computer software’s or applications or programs that are mostly used all over the world.
These are basic computer applications that every person should be aware of.
In Kenya many people think computer packages are meant for form four leavers but even primary school pupils can learn them.
If one learns computer packages very well, he or she can be able to run a cyber café business without any problem.
Computer packages includes;
1. Introduction to Computers
Introduction to computer entails basic concepts of computer or information technology. These includes; how a computer functions, components of a computer, power of a computer, measurements of storage and speed, characteristic of computer, computer virus, computer maintenance, software installation, basic troubleshooting of computer and its related gadgets, Microsoft windows, computer security, etc.
2. Microsoft Word
This is an application software of preparing documents. It is the mostly used application. This is the application that sets the stage for learning other computer packages. On this application one should be able to write letters, CVs and such documents. Documents formatting should be emphasized here.
3. Microsoft PowerPoint
This is the application that is used to prepare presentations (these are summaries). The application is also used to create posters and clips.
4. Microsoft Excel
These is the application that is used to prepare spreadsheets. This application simplifies calculations, preparing of charts, sorting and filtering data.
5. Microsoft Publisher
This application is mostly used to prepare computer graphics. This is the application where one learns to design harambee and wedding cards, posters, certificates, branded envelopes, business cards, etc.
6. Microsoft Access
This is a very short application. It is used to create database (collection of information). It has only four concepts; tables, queries, forms and reports. It is mostly used by people developing applications.
7. Internet
This is the widest computer application. It has a lot of things to learn that include;
1) Computer networks (local and wide area, home groups)
2) Browsers (chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc)
3) Information management using emails like Gmail, yahoo, yandex, etc
4) Computer security (passwords, domain extensions, fake web pages, etc)
5) Social media (Facebook, social sites, WhatsApp, etc)
6) KRA services (pin registration, filing returns, tax compliance, recovery of lost pin)
7) NTSA services (TIMs, NTSA classes, applying driving licence, class endorsement, motor vehicle transfer, etc)
8) Ecitizen services (applying passport, registering marriage, business and company registration, HELB compliance, police clearance certificate, driving license renewal, etc)
9) TSC services (TPAY, TPAD, TSC online, minet)
10) NCA services
11) Payslips (GHRIS and Tpay)
12) NHIF services (registration and hospital selection)
13) Creating posters online
14) Creating YouTube channel
15) Online collaboration ( Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive)
16) Creating blogs/websites
17) And many other areas.
Computer packages should be learnt in 2 months, 2 hours per day and the cost should be around 4,000/=.
While learning computer packages the issue of sharing computer should be discouraged. The more hours one is in contact with the computer the better.
