Gone Too Soon

Shiru was my classmate,
A girl of beauty and grace,
But her mind wandered far from books,
Her heart found no place in the chase.

She thrived in the football club,
Danced bright in drama’s glow,
But on every beauty contest stage,
Miss High School, she stole the show.

Shiru knew the art of elegance,
Like the 'circumcised girls' who sneered,
Believing others lacked her polish,
Their cleanliness to be feared.

But Shiru had a love for money,
It pulled her into endless fights—
With jealous wives, with stern parents,
And the academy's glaring lights.

She walked with married men in shadows,
Crawled with teachers in the dark,
Ran with sons of tycoons,
And strutted with the old, leaving her mark.

Her fortune turned with Guka Karanja,
A rich widower of seventy six years,
Shiru, barely twenty, became his bride—
Her motives crystal clear.

She wasn’t there for love’s embrace,
But for wealth she thought was near,
She believed his days were numbered,
Past the Bible’s promised years.

Yet life had different plans for her—
At twenty-three, her fate was sealed.
Pneumonia claimed her,
She left behind a single child,
Her dreams of riches unrevealed.
