New Law Seeks to Educate and Protect Kenyans Through Professionalized Insurance Sector

Kenyans may soon make more informed decisions about insurance, thanks to the enactment of the Insurance Professionals Act, 2025, a landmark law designed to raise professional standards and protect the public from malpractice in the insurance industry.

The Act establishes the Insurance Institute of Kenya and the Insurance Professionals Examinations Board, creating a structured system for training, examining, registering and disciplining insurance professionals.

For ordinary Kenyans, this law is not just about professionals—it is about trust, transparency and consumer protection in a sector that directly affects livelihoods, businesses and families.

At the heart of the Act is education. By requiring insurance practitioners to undergo accredited training, pass standardized examinations, and obtain annual practising certificates, the law ensures that those selling or advising on insurance products are competent and ethical.

Mis-selling, fraud, and negligence—long-standing complaints among consumers—are now clearly defined as professional misconduct, attracting sanctions including suspension or cancellation of registration.

This framework empowers Kenyans to demand accountability and to verify whether an insurance agent or broker is duly registered before engaging their services.

The Act also offers a powerful opportunity to educate the public. With a formal register open for inspection, Kenyans can check the credentials of insurance professionals and understand the difference between qualified practitioners and impostors.

In addition, the law encourages continuous professional development and research, which can translate into better public awareness campaigns, clearer insurance products, and improved risk management culture across the country.

As climate shocks, health emergencies, and business risks increase, a well-regulated insurance profession can play a critical role in helping citizens prepare rather than react.

Ultimately, the Insurance Professionals Act, 2025 positions education as the bridge between regulation and public confidence. By professionalising the industry and placing ethical conduct at its core, the law gives Kenyans not only better protection, but also knowledge—knowledge to ask the right questions, choose the right cover, and hold professionals accountable.

If fully implemented and widely publicised, this Act could mark a turning point in how Kenyans understand and experience insurance in their daily lives.
