Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers:
- Adult Family Homes (AFHs) and Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) must have working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
- Know their locations and check their functionality regularly.
- If a client’s home lacks these devices, recommend installing them.
- Test smoke detectors several times a year, such as during daylight savings time changes.
- Keep extra batteries available for replacements.
- Stay with clients who cannot safely smoke alone due to dementia, confusion, or medications that cause drowsiness.
- Ensure safe disposal of cigarette butts and ashes.
- Verify that the stove is turned off when not in use.
- Never leave food unattended while cooking.
- Ensure the damper is open before lighting a fire.
- Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
- Remove ashes only after the fire is completely out and the ashes are cool.
- Place ashes in a metal container and store them outside, away from wooden structures.
- Never use paper containers for ash disposal.
- Set heaters on a level, hard, and nonflammable surface (e.g., ceramic tile).
- Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from bedding, curtains, and furniture.
- Turn off heaters when leaving the area.
- Report any fire safety hazards immediately to the appropriate person in your workplace.
