Preparing for Natural Disasters: Guidelines for LTC Workers

Emergency Kits
  • An emergency kit should provide enough supplies to last at least three days without assistance.
AFHs and ALFs:
  • Must maintain emergency supplies—know their location.
HCA workers:
  • Encourage clients to keep emergency kits at home.
Earthquake Preparedness

During an Earthquake:
  • Indoors: Take cover under a desk or table and hold on.
  • Stay away from windows, glass, and heavy furniture.
  • Outdoors: Move away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • In a car: Stay in the vehicle and move away from bridges and overpasses.
After the Earthquake:
  • Evacuate when shaking stops.
  • Do not move injured persons unless they are in immediate danger.
Weather Emergencies
  • Severe weather conditions include wind, rain, heat, lightning, and flooding.
Heat Safety Tips:
  • Use sunscreen (SPF 30+).
  • Wear sunglasses and hats.
  • Stay hydrated—drink plenty of fluids.
  • Stay in shade if outdoors for long periods.
  • Never leave a client or pet in a car on warm days.
Power Outages

In AFHs or ALFs:
  • Ensure emergency lighting or flashlights are available.
During a Power Outage:
  • Reassure clients—explain what’s happening.
  • Disconnect heaters and appliances to prevent power surges.
  • Unplug computers to avoid damage.
  • Conserve water, especially if on a well system.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed: A full freezer can keep food frozen for two days.
  • Leave one light switch on to know when power returns.
  • Avoid using candles—fire hazard.
  • Ensure ventilation when using kerosene heaters or gas lanterns.
  • Never use charcoal or gas grills indoors—they produce carbon monoxide.
In Client Homes:
  • Register life-sustaining equipment with the utility company.
  • Encourage clients to purchase generators or know rental sources.
  • Keep utility company phone numbers handy for updates.
  • Learn to operate manual garage doors.
  • Encourage clients to: Maintain alternative heat sources and fuel supplies.
  • Check fuse boxes or circuit breakers if power loss is isolated.
Be calm and prepared.

Follow emergency procedures outlined in care plans.

Document all actions and report emergencies to supervisors once resolved.
