Safe Use of Household Chemicals and Illness Prevention

Maintaining a Sanitary Environment

Using household chemicals properly helps prevent illness by eliminating germs and maintaining cleanliness. Follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Understanding Product Labels

Labels provide important safety warnings:
  • Caution – May irritate skin, cause sickness if inhaled, or harm eyes.
  • Warning – Greater risk than "Caution." May lead to serious injury or illness and often indicates flammability.
  • Danger – Serious hazard. Requires extreme care to avoid severe harm or sickness.
Important: Never remove labels, as they contain emergency treatment instructions.

Working Safely with Household Chemicals

Never Mix Cleaners: Especially avoid mixing bleach and ammonia—this combination releases a toxic gas that can cause breathing problems or death.

Ventilation Matters: Use chemicals in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling harmful fumes.

Wear Protection: Gloves for all-purpose cleaners.
Goggles and gloves for oven and drain cleaners.

Storage Guidelines: Keep products cool, dry, and away from flames or heat sources. Stack safely to prevent spills.

No Smoking: Avoid smoking around flammable products.

Stop Immediately if Sick: Discontinue use if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or develop a headache.

What to Do If Chemicals Spill or Splash

On Skin: Rinse thoroughly with water after brushing off powders or wiping off liquids.

In Eyes: Rinse with running water for 15 minutes.
Keep eyelids open wide while flushing.
Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Reminder: Medications are chemical substances too. Avoid skin contact, inhalation, or contamination of food and utensils.

Protect Clients When You Are Sick

Stay Home if Contagious: Don’t risk exposing clients to contagious illnesses like the flu.
Many clients are frail with weakened immune systems, which increases their vulnerability.

Notify Your Supervisor Early: Give enough time to arrange a replacement for your shift. Keep important contact numbers accessible at home.

By following these safety guidelines and precautions, you help protect yourself and your clients while maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
