A Novena for a Man with Pure Intentions

Nine Days of Prayer for the Young Woman Desiring Love, Commitment, and Marriage

Introduction: I Am Looking for More Than One Night

Dear young woman,

There is nothing wrong with wanting to be loved.

There is nothing wrong with dreaming about meeting a man who will look at you and see more than your physical beauty. There is nothing wrong with desiring marriage, companionship, children, a home, or someone with whom you can walk through the different seasons of life.

These are beautiful desires. But as you journey through life, you will meet different kinds of men.

Some may admire you. Some may genuinely care about you. Some may be attracted to you but have no idea what they want from life. Some may promise you things they have no intention of giving you. And unfortunately, you may also meet men whose primary interest is gaining access to your body.

A man may tell you that you are beautiful. He may tell you that he has never met anyone like you. He may call you constantly, take you to beautiful places, buy you gifts, and tell you everything your heart has been longing to hear. But beautiful words do not always reveal beautiful intentions.

Sometimes a man may want you for one evening while you are dreaming about sharing an entire lifetime with someone. That difference matters.

You are not wrong because someone desires you physically. Attraction is a natural part of romantic relationships. A good man may find you beautiful and strongly desire you while still respecting you, honoring your boundaries, exercising self-control, and sincerely considering marriage.

The question, therefore, is not simply, “Does this man desire me?” The deeper question is, “What does he intend to do with that desire?”

Does his desire lead him toward honoring you or using you?

Does he respect your boundaries?

Does he care about your dreams?

Does he want to know your character?

Can he wait?

Can he accept the word no?

Is he interested in knowing the people who matter to you?

Does he speak seriously about the future?

Does he take responsibility for his life?

Does he want to build something with you, or does he simply want to experience something with you?

These questions matter because you are looking for more than one night. You are looking for someone with whom you can do life.

This novena is for the young woman who carries that desire.

For nine days, you are invited to bring your heart before God. You will pray not only for the man you hope to meet but also for the woman you are becoming.

Do not spend these nine days asking only, “God, where is my husband?” Ask also, “God, who am I becoming while I wait for him?”

Perhaps somewhere in the world there is a man who will one day become your husband. You may already know him, or perhaps you have never met him. Pray that God is working in his life. But also pray that God is working in yours.

May these nine days teach you not merely how to find love, but how to recognize healthy love when it comes.

Day One : I Know My Worth

Scripture : “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” — Psalm 139:14

Reflection

Before you pray for the man who will love you, you must begin by understanding that your value does not begin when a man chooses you.

You were valuable before anyone asked for your phone number.

You were valuable before anyone called you beautiful.

You were valuable before your first relationship.

And if someone rejects you tomorrow, you will still be valuable.

This truth is important because sometimes the desire to be loved can become so strong that we begin negotiating away pieces of ourselves simply to keep someone interested.

A young woman may know something makes her uncomfortable, but she agrees because she is afraid the man will leave.

She may notice warning signs but silence herself because she desperately wants the relationship to work.

She may even give her body when her heart is saying no because she has been told, directly or indirectly, “If you really love me, prove it.”

But love should never require you to surrender your dignity.

You do not have to purchase commitment with your body.

You do not have to compete sexually for a man's attention.

You do not have to become whatever someone wants simply because you are afraid of being alone.

Your worth is not determined by whether you have a boyfriend, fiance, or husband.

Marriage can be a beautiful vocation, but marriage does not manufacture human worth.

Before you become someone's wife, you are already God's beloved daughter.

Therefore, on this first day, do not begin by asking God to send you a man. Begin by asking God to help you see yourself correctly. Because when you understand your worth, you become more willing to walk away from people who repeatedly treat you as though you have none.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Today I come before You with my desire to love and to be loved.

You know the secret dreams of my heart. You know that I desire someone with whom I can share my life. But before I ask You to bring that person into my life, teach me to understand the value You have already placed within me.

Protect me from believing that I need a man's attention to prove that I am beautiful.

Protect me from accepting disrespect because I am afraid of loneliness.

Protect me from giving away pieces of myself simply to keep someone interested.

Teach me to know that I am worthy of respect.

If someone enters my life who wants only what he can take from me, give me courage to recognize it.

If someone pressures me to violate my convictions, give me courage to say no.

And when saying no means losing someone, give me enough strength to let him go.

Father, teach me that rejection can sometimes be protection.

I would rather lose someone who does not respect me than lose myself trying to keep him.

Amen.

My Declaration

I am valuable.

My body is valuable.

My heart is valuable.

My future is valuable.

I do not need to trade my dignity for affection.

I will not measure my worth by how many men desire me.

I will wait for love that knows how to respect me.

Day Two : Lord, Give Me Discernment

Scripture : “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God.” — James 1:5

Reflection

Not everyone who approaches you will announce his intentions.

Very few people will say, “I want to use you.”

Instead, intentions are often hidden behind charming words.

That is why you need discernment.

Discernment means learning to see beyond what someone says and paying attention to patterns.

Anyone can say, “I love you.”

But what does his behavior say?

Does he respect you when you disagree?

Does he disappear whenever you establish boundaries?

Does every conversation eventually become sexual?

Does he want to meet only privately or late at night?

Is he interested in your mind, your faith, your work, your dreams, your family, and your future?

Or does his interest consistently return to your body?

Time reveals many things that excitement hides.

This is why you do not have to rush.

A person with sincere intentions will generally be willing to allow the relationship to develop honestly. Someone seeking immediate gratification may become frustrated when access is delayed.

Pay attention to frustration.

Pay attention to pressure.

Pay attention to secrecy.

Pay attention to inconsistency.

And also pay attention to goodness.

Notice the man who keeps his word.

Notice the man who respects people from whom he has nothing to gain.

Notice how he talks about women who are not present.

Notice how he treats his family.

Notice whether he takes responsibility when he is wrong.

Notice whether his faith is something he lives or merely something he mentions because he knows it matters to you.

Do not ask God merely to give you a husband.

Ask God to give you eyes capable of recognizing character.

Prayer

Lord,

Give me discernment.

Do not allow loneliness to make decisions that wisdom would reject.

When words are beautiful but intentions are wrong, help me see clearly.

When someone is pretending to be what I desire, allow time and truth to reveal his character.

Save me from confusing attention with love.

Save me from confusing chemistry with compatibility.

Save me from confusing sexual attraction with commitment.

Save me from believing promises unsupported by actions.

And Father, when a genuinely good man enters my life, give me discernment to recognize goodness too.

Do not allow past disappointments to make me suspicious of everyone.

Give me wisdom without bitterness, caution without fear, and openness without foolishness.

Amen.

Day Three : Lord, Help Me Protect My Heart and Body

Scripture : “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

Reflection

Boundaries are not punishment.

They are protection.

A healthy boundary says, “This is how I expect to be treated.”

You should never have to apologize for having convictions about your body, your relationships, your time, or your future.

A man who sincerely respects you may not agree with every boundary you establish, but he should be capable of respecting your right to establish it.

The word no reveals character. Watch what happens when you say it.

A man who becomes angry, manipulative, threatening, insulting, or distant whenever you refuse something is showing you something important.

Listen.

You should never have to use sex to persuade someone to remain in your life.

If the relationship collapses simply because you refused sexual access, painful though it may be, you have learned something important about what was holding the relationship together.

The man you hope to marry should care about protecting your dignity as much as you do.

Prayer

Father,

Give me courage to establish healthy boundaries.

When I am afraid that saying no will make someone leave, remind me that the person meant to walk with me must be able to respect my convictions.

Give me strength when I am pressured.

Give me clarity when I am manipulated.

Give me courage when someone says, “If you loved me, you would.”

Teach me that love does not demand that I violate myself to prove its existence.

Protect my body.

Protect my emotions.

Protect my future.

And teach me also to respect the boundaries of the man who comes into my life.

May our relationship never be built on pressure, manipulation, fear, or selfishness.

May it be built upon mutual honor.

Amen.

Day Four : Heal Me Before I Choose

Scripture : “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

Reflection

Sometimes we enter new relationships carrying old wounds.

Perhaps someone betrayed you.

Perhaps someone promised marriage and disappeared.

Perhaps someone used you sexually.

Perhaps you gave yourself to someone believing the relationship would last, only to discover that he never intended to stay.

Perhaps you experienced abuse.

Perhaps rejection convinced you that you were not beautiful enough, lovable enough, or worthy enough.

Your past deserves compassion, but it should not be allowed to control your future.

Healing does not mean pretending nothing happened. Healing means allowing what happened to stop determining what happens next.

You do not have to punish your future husband for something another man did.

Neither should you return repeatedly to harmful relationships simply because pain has become familiar.

Ask God to heal you.

And where deeper wounds require professional counseling, spiritual guidance, or trustworthy support, seeking that help is not weakness. Prayer and wise human help can walk together.

Prayer

Jesus,

Enter the places in my heart that still hurt.

You know every disappointment I carry.

You know every person whose memory still makes my heart ache.

You know the things I regret.

You know what was done to me and what I willingly participated in.

I place all of it before You.

Heal me.

Where I need to forgive, help me begin.

Where I need to forgive myself, teach me mercy.

Where I need professional help, give me courage to seek it.

Do not allow yesterday's wounds to choose tomorrow's husband.

Make my heart whole enough to recognize healthy love.

Amen.

Day Five : Lord, Prepare the Man I Will Marry

Scripture : “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” — Ecclesiastes 4:9

Reflection

Today, your prayer turns toward the man you may one day marry.

Perhaps you know him.

Perhaps you do not.

Do not pray merely that he will find you.

Pray for the man himself.

Pray that he becomes truthful.

Pray that he learns responsibility.

Pray that he develops self-control.

Pray that he knows how to work, apologize, communicate, forgive, remain faithful, and keep commitments.

Pray that he understands that a wife is not property.

Pray that he will never measure masculinity by how many women he can conquer.

Pray that he will have the courage to leave casual relationships behind and become a man capable of covenant.

And remember: you are not praying for a perfect man. No such husband exists.

You are praying for a man whose imperfections do not prevent him from being teachable, accountable, faithful, respectful, and committed to growth.

Prayer

Father,

Wherever the man I may one day marry is today, I place him before You.

Protect him.

Guide him.

Correct him.

Mature him.

If he is making choices that could destroy his future, interrupt him.

If he is trapped in habits that would later wound our marriage, help him confront them.

Teach him faithfulness before he meets me.

Teach him self-control.

Teach him responsibility.

Teach him tenderness without weakness and strength without cruelty.

May he learn to see women as human beings worthy of dignity rather than bodies to conquer.

Prepare him to become a husband who knows that marriage requires sacrifice.

And Father, while You are preparing him, prepare me.

Amen.

Day Six : Give Me Patience to Wait

Scripture : “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

Reflection

Waiting can become difficult when everyone around you appears to be moving ahead.

A friend gets engaged.

Another gets married.

Someone younger than you announces a pregnancy.

Suddenly you begin wondering, “What about me?”

Loneliness can make almost any companionship look attractive. That is dangerous.

Never allow the fear of being single to persuade you to marry someone you already know is wrong for you.

Marriage does not cure loneliness automatically.

You can share a house and bed with someone and still experience profound loneliness.

Therefore, do not pray simply to be married quickly.

Pray to choose wisely.

The right marriage is worth waiting for.

And while you wait, live.

Build friendships.

Study.

Work.

Travel when you can.

Serve.

Laugh.

Develop your gifts.

Deepen your relationship with God.

Become financially and emotionally responsible.

Your unmarried years are not a waiting room in which life has been suspended until a husband arrives.

They are part of your life.

Live them.

Prayer

Father,

Teach me patience.

When I see others getting married and begin wondering whether You have forgotten me, quiet my fears.

Keep me from settling simply because I am tired of waiting.

Protect me from relationships born out of desperation.

If waiting another season protects me from years of pain, give me grace to wait.

But do not allow waiting to make me passive.

Teach me to live fully now.

May I grow, learn, work, serve, laugh, build friendships, and become the woman You created me to be.

My life has already begun.

Amen.

Day Seven : Help Me Recognize Pure Intentions

Scripture : “By their fruit you will recognize them.” — Matthew 7:16

Reflection

How will you recognize a man with pure intentions?

Not merely by what he says.

Look at his fruit.

Pure intentions are demonstrated through consistency.

He respects your boundaries even when he is disappointed.

He does not hide you.

He wants to know who you really are.

He can discuss difficult subjects.

He is willing to talk about marriage honestly rather than keeping you permanently trapped in an undefined relationship.

He takes responsibility for his own life.

He respects your goals instead of feeling threatened by them.

He is interested in building trust, not merely creating sexual opportunity.

He does not pressure you to prove your love physically.

He allows the relationship to exist in daylight.

Most importantly, he understands that marriage is more than a wedding.

Marriage is ordinary Tuesdays.

It is bills.

Illness.

Children, perhaps.

Family disagreements.

Career decisions.

Laundry.

Forgiveness.

Intimacy.

Sacrifice.

Growing older.

The man with whom you do life needs more than charm.

He needs character.

Prayer

Father,

When a man enters my life, help me see beyond appearance.

Help me look beyond charm.

Give me patience to observe his character.

Show me how he treats people when he is angry.

Show me how he handles money.

Show me whether he keeps his promises.

Show me whether he can apologize.

Show me whether he respects women.

Show me whether his faith produces fruit.

And show me myself as well.

If I am ignoring warning signs because I desperately want the relationship, correct me.

May I never become so attached to the idea of marriage that I refuse to see the truth about the person I am considering marrying.

Amen.

Day Eight : Lord, Prepare Me to Become a Good Wife

Scripture : “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” — Luke 6:31

Reflection

It is easy to write a long list describing the husband you want.

Faithful.

Responsible.

Hardworking.

Gentle.

Patient.

Prayerful.

Emotionally mature.

Financially responsible.

Respectful.

But today, turn the list around.

What kind of wife will he receive?

If you desire honesty, are you becoming honest?

If you desire patience, are you learning patience?

If you desire financial responsibility, how do you handle money?

If you desire emotional maturity, are you learning to communicate without manipulation?

If you desire faithfulness, are you faithful?

If you desire someone who can apologize, can you apologize?

Marriage does not transform selfish people magically into selfless people.

Marriage reveals character.

Therefore, your season of singleness can become a workshop. Let God work on you.

Not because you must become perfect before you deserve love, but because healthy relationships are built by two imperfect people willing to grow.

Prayer

Father,

I have spent much time thinking about the man I want.

Today I ask You to show me the woman I need to become.

Correct my selfishness.

Heal my insecurities.

Teach me communication.

Teach me responsibility.

Teach me how to disagree without destroying.

Teach me to apologize without excuses.

Teach me forgiveness.

Teach me faithfulness.

Teach me how to love someone without trying to control him.

Prepare me not merely for a wedding but for marriage.

May the man who eventually calls me his wife also be able to thank You for bringing me into his life.

Amen.

Day Nine : I Surrender My Love Story to You

Scripture : “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Reflection

For eight days, you have prayed.

Today, you surrender.

Perhaps this is the hardest prayer of the novena.

Because surrender means saying, “God, I have told You what I desire, but I will not destroy myself trying to force it to happen.”

You desire marriage. Tell God.

You desire companionship. Tell Him.

You desire intimacy. Tell Him.

You desire children and family, if those are your hopes. Tell Him.

There is no shame in these desires.

But then open your hands.

Do not make marriage an idol.

Do not allow the desire for a husband to become greater than your desire for truth, peace, dignity, and God.

You cannot control when the right person will arrive.

You cannot guarantee that every relationship will succeed.

You cannot eliminate every possibility of heartbreak.

But you can decide that desperation will not lead you.

You can decide that loneliness will not become your matchmaker.

You can decide that sexual pressure will not determine your boundaries.

You can decide to pay attention to character.

You can decide to seek wise counsel.

You can decide to walk away when a relationship repeatedly dishonors you.

And you can trust God with everything you cannot control.

Final Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Here is my heart.

Here are my dreams.

Here is my desire to love and to be loved.

You know that I desire a man with pure intentions.

I desire someone who does not merely want my body for one night but who is willing, if our relationship grows in the right direction, to build a life with me.

I desire friendship.

I desire companionship.

I desire faithfulness.

I desire respect.

I desire laughter.

I desire intimacy within a relationship of trust and commitment.

I desire someone with whom I can face both beautiful and difficult seasons.

But today I surrender these desires to You.

Do not allow my longing for marriage to become desperation.

If someone enters my life who intends only to use me, give me wisdom to recognize it and courage to walk away.

If someone comes with beautiful words but dishonest intentions, expose what I cannot see.

If someone pressures me to abandon my convictions in order to keep him, remind me that love does not require me to betray myself.

And when a good man enters my life, give me wisdom not to sabotage something beautiful because of previous wounds.

Teach us to know each other slowly.

Teach us honesty.

Teach us friendship.

Teach us respect.

Teach us self-control.

Teach us forgiveness.

Teach us how to communicate.

Teach us how to pray together.

And if the relationship moves toward marriage, give both of us courage to enter that covenant with clear eyes and willing hearts.

Father, I also pray for the man I may one day call my husband.

Wherever he is, work in him.

Wherever I am, work in me.

If there are habits in him that could destroy our future home, confront them.

If there are habits in me that could destroy our future home, confront them too.

I refuse to spend all my prayers asking You to change an unknown man while refusing to let You change me.

Prepare both of us.

And if Your timing is longer than mine, give me patience.

I will not put my life on hold.

I will live.

I will grow.

I will serve.

I will laugh.

I will learn.

I will develop my gifts.

I will nurture meaningful friendships.

I will become wiser.

I will become stronger.

I will become more loving.

And if one day our paths meet, may we recognize something deeper than attraction.

May we recognize friendship.

Character.

Respect.

Peace.

Purpose.

And the possibility of covenant.

Until that day, guard my heart without closing it.

Protect my body without teaching me to fear love.

Give me standards without pride.

Give me discernment without suspicion.

Give me patience without hopelessness.

Give me desire without desperation.

And give me faith without fantasy.

My life is in Your hands.

My future is in Your hands.

And my love story is in Your hands.

Amen.

Closing Declaration After the Nine Days

I do not need to chase love at the expense of my dignity.

I do not need to compete for someone's commitment.

I do not need to give my body to prove that my heart is sincere.

I will not mistake attention for intention.

I will not mistake attraction for commitment.

I will not mistake promises for character.

I will observe.

I will pray.

I will listen.

I will ask questions.

I will seek wisdom.

I will give relationships enough time for character to reveal itself.

I desire a man who does not simply ask, “How can I have her?”

I desire a man capable of asking, “How can we build a life together?”

And while I pray for such a man, I will become the kind of woman who can also build that life.

I am not waiting for someone to begin my life.

My life has already begun.

And I trust God with every chapter still unwritten.

Amen.
