Domains Extensions in Kenya

How many times have you ever searched for something on the internet and you did not get it? How many minutes do you waste on the internet before you get what you want? How many times have you been conned on the internet because of visiting scam sites?

I run a cyber café business and customers come and waste their time on irrelevant sites. Some end up claiming the network is slow and not worth their time. But, the fact is they are the ones who visit wrong sites. When they request for help that is when they realize their mistakes.

The first thing internet users need to understand is what the end of the URL or links they visit mean. For example, think of a person searching for courses offered at Kenyatta university. On searching the internet one will land on the below page.

The above page shows links of web pages with list of courses offered at Kenyatta University. But, only one link is relevant and contains relevant information (http://www.ku.ac.ke). This is what one looks for:

1. All Kenyan educational websites end with an extension .ac.ke. Search for universities or colleges like Kabete Polytechnic, KMTC and you will find they have .ac.ke. Only international schools have .edu extension. For example, Catholic University of East Africa.

2. All government websites end with .go.ke. Search for sites like Ecitizen, NTSA, county websites, KRA, among others and will will note it. A citizen searching for government information on sites without .go.ke is wasting time.

3. All Kenyan commercial businesses, the ones that make profit, have either .co.ke or .com extension. Local businesses are supposed to have a local .co.ke extension. While, a business with a global reach is supposed to have .com extension.

4. Organizations that are not for profit like NGOs, churches, community based organizations are supposed to have .org or .or.ke extension.

5. Firms that develop solutions like apps are supposed to have a .net extension. When you see a website like KUCCPS with a .net extension it means the developer of the site is not the government or if it is the government the developer was not keen while registering the domain name.

These extensions one chooses them while registering a domain name (for example www.davidodigitalsolutions.com). These domain names are bought from companies like safaricom, Ipage, Godaddy, among others.
