I been in business for the last 5 years now. I have learnt a lot about business than any other subject. The best thing is I practice what I learn.
I have realized the best teachers of business are not teachers in educational institutions but the real business owners. If you want to learn about business forget about books in our schools and look for books written by real business owners. You will meet stories that will change your perspective completely.
In those years I have been in business I have realized many business owners in Kenya are in business with divided mind. That is, they are not committed to see their businesses flourish. Opening a business every day for a hundred years is not a sign of having a commitment to it.
Businesses run by the educated people are the mostly affected. And, that is why many of businesses that flourish are run by people with little formal education if any. Business people with college or university education are wavering; they are in business but their minds are searching for employment. Thus they do not give their businesses total attention. But, business people with little education know they cannot get good jobs than their businesses and thus they give all their energy and resources to them.
The day business owners in Kenya will have a commitment to grow their businesses that is when those businesses shall flourish. This means investing in their businesses. Investing in business (starting a business) does not make a business to flourish. But, investing in business (giving the business the power to grow) can make it flourish.
For example, it is very common in Kenya to find business people who draw funds from their businesses to almost crippling them, in order to gain more education and increase their employability level. Such a business cannot flourish to its highest level.
I have learnt practically, for a business to flourish it must be given all the resources it needs. Kenyan business people, and especially the young generation in business, must learn the importance of using the income of the business to make it grow and move to the next level, instead of using it in activities that do not help their businesses thrive. If that is not the case, then many businesses will never flourish.
