Description
The opportunity I have is of educating employees about internal promotion. Many employees apply for internal jobs but they fail to get them and as a result become demotivated with their jobs. But, why do employees miss internal promotion? The major reason is failing to understand promotion guidelines (Beasley, 2003). Employees are like they are caught unware of the opportunities that emerge in their places of work.
Internal promotion is relevant to me in that I look forward to rise higher in the hierarchy of organization I work with. I have been promoted twice in the past and am looking forward for more. By sharing what I know about internal promotion I will help employees who miss promotions to know where they go wrong. It will also help me improve my communication skills.
Goal
In this communication I want employees to know where they make a mistake and miss internal promotions. I would like to let employees know what employers look for when promoting existing employees. Also, I would like to help employees who want to be promoted on how to prepare to be promoted.
Audience
My target audience are employees who look forward for internal promotions. These include employees at all job levels, that is, entry level, senior staff, first level managers, middle level managers and executive (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). This is because all employees look forward to rise to the highest level in the organization; CEO. These employees consist of both males and females, people of color, young and old, and people with different roles and responsibilities.
I relate with my audience some as my supervisors, equals and others are under me. My audiences have wide knowledge and expertise in their roles. My audience want to know what else do they need to have or do apart from their expertise in order to be promoted. What can hinder me from having a good rapport with my audience is some of the audience are employees we applied an internal promotion with, they missed it and I got it. Some believe I got promoted through back door or because I am a darling to the senior management.
I will use data from already done research to understand my audience better. My audience believes internal promotion is better for the success of an organization. They strongly believe internally promoted employees perform better than external hires (Robinson, 2021). Bu, on the other hand, they hold internal promotion is biased and does not consider applicants’ qualifications. The setting of my communication will be formal and my tone will be personal to avoid losing some of my audience especially the older employees.
Key Message
The primary message I will pass to my audience is it takes more than academic papers to be promoted. This message is compelling as it will invoke the audience to think beyond acquiring more academic certificates. For example, soft skills like teamwork, handling conflicts, positive attitude, time management and so forth. The message is concise and on point as it addresses what the audience wants to know.
Supporting Points
Educational papers are not a great concern when promoting employees. This is because there are employees who have more academic papers than their seniors and they fail to be promoted. Two, how can one be promoted to a job that has more responsibilities yet he or she does not satisfy the current job responsibilities. It is employees who meet current job targets who get considered for promotion. Three, how an employee relate with colleagues and clients is another factor during internal promotion. An employee who does not handle clients with respect and dignity they deserve is not worth promotion. I will use recent research reports to justify my message.
Channel Selection
In this case I will use inform communication style. This because the audience wants to know. The channel I will use to deliver the message is teleconference. The channel will be effective as it will enable remote employees to join the conversation. Also, it will enable the participants to keep distance due to covid-19 pandemic.
Action Request
At the end of this communication, the audience should resolve to work on their other aspects apart from acquiring more academic certificates. This includes taking an action to improve their soft skills. This is achievable as employees can decide to change their attitudes towards what they do.
