Palestinians and Israelis Dispute

Current Dispute between the Palestinians and Israelis

The conflict between Palestine and Israel though has religious and cultural roots, it is all about gaining control of Gaza Strip and West Bank. The conflict has a long history that dates back to 1800BC when Hebrews who were Semites moved to the area in conflict. Before the Hebrews arrived from Mesopotamia (the current day Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey) the region was under the control of Philistines who had conquered it from the local people, the Canaanites (Isseroff, 2009). But, does it mean historically the people with Mesopotamia origin are hostile by nature?

The current conflict in the region can be traced as from 1947 when Resolution 181 was adopted by the United Nations with an aim of Partitioning the region into Arab and Jewish states. When the state of Israel was created the Arab-Israel War began because it gave the Jewish the power to control the region that Palestine’s were controlling before the British took control of the region (Council on Foreign Relations, 2021). By the time the war came to an end in 1949 almost a million Palestinians has been displaced and the Israel victory led to further subdivision of the region into; the state of Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The Jews who were minority took the control at the expense of the majority who were the Arabs.

The Israelis had been triggering wars in the region citing Palestine aggression on its borders. But, the Arabs in the region controlled by the Jews have been undergoing discrimination. For example, they are illegally displaced and their land given to the Jews. But, why are these two groups fighting to control the city of Jerusalem? It is because Jews sees it as their eternal home while the Arabs sees it as a future home of their leadership (NBC, 2021). The Israelis have been occupying East Jerusalem which is not recognized as their region internationally. The region is composed of a huge population who profess the Islamic beliefs. But, to provoke the Palestine’s, Jews even goes to march in the region as they celebrate the Jerusalem holiday.

Challenges Facing its Resolution

The major challenge of Israel-Palestine conflict is what is termed as the protected values. These are values that a given society believes they cannot be changed. For example, the Jews believes their borders cannot be moved to a foreign ruler including the city of Jerusalem. The Palestine’s also believes they cannot accept Gaza Strip and West Bank alone as their nation. They believe even the state of Israel belongs to them. this notion is even used in campaigns to sway the electorates. For instance, in 1996 Binyamin Netanyahu used the slogan, “Peres will divide Jerusalem” to woo voters. This protected values makes the concerned parties to frustrate plans of conflict resolutions as no party is willing to make a compromise (Landman, n.d.).

The second challenge in solving the conflict is involvement of the Hamas in peace talks. The Palestine authority has joined Hamas, which is regarded as a terror group by the United States, in efforts of searching for a long lasting peace. This group does not make any compromise and it refuses reached agreements like Abraham Accords. This makes interfaith and intercultural talks in the region a hard nut to crack.

Recommendations

The first recommendation in resolving the Israel – Palestine Conflict is both parties should practice tolerance. The Jews should respect the culture and believes of Muslims and vice versa. Tolerance will enable both parties to come to the same table and reach an agreement that will benefit both parties. But, they have to melt their protected values. They need to realize in conflict resolution the process is give and take. It is about reaching an agreement that accommodates both parties (OCHA, 2021).

Two, the region occupied by the Palestine is too small for the population that has been growing tremendously. Israel should be ready give some of its land to the Palestine’s so that they can also develop. But, will they do it and they are in fact displacing the Muslims or Arabs in the state of Israel? The fact is Jews took a lot of land that was under the control of British and left the minority without enough land (Goodman, 2019).

Israel Palestine Next Talks Outcome

The current state of Israel and Palestine clearly shows that if peace talks are held in the near future they will not materialize. This is because the issues that both parties have been fighting for are not showing signs of been resolved. For example, Israel is still displacing the Arab in East Jerusalem borders and preventing Muslims to enter Mosques in their region to pray and carry out their faith celebrations (Barron, 2021). This shows the Jews are still hostile towards the Palestine.
