American Red Cross works together with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in providing much needed humanitarian support to immigrants crossing U.S. – Mexico border. FEMA is the federal entity responsible for coordinating disaster responses. It was established after 9/11 terror attack and is in the Department of Homeland security. The temporary support that American Red Cross provides includes;
a) Providing a safe place to stay for young people arriving at U.S. – Mexico border
American Red Cross provides assistance to disaster victims without discriminating them using race, class, age, status, gender, beliefs, citizenship, among other factors. The organization provides shelter to children who arrive at the U.S. – Mexico border without parents or guardians. This is done in collaboration with FEMA and Department of Health and Human Services. But, what if the parents bring these youngsters close to the border and then abandon them as a way of making them reach U.S? The organization also provides training and volunteers who provide shelter operations. This gives the FEMA time to put in place infrastructure and build the required operational capacity (The American National Red Cross, 2021).
b) Supporting other non-profit organizations at the U.S. – Mexico border
The organization provides relief items like blankets, masks, hand sanitizers, hygiene items and cots to nonprofit entities that care for migrants in states such as Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. It also provides mobile phones that are used by the migrants to communicate with their families, relatives and friends back at home. The organization believes saying, “I am Safe” is enough to make the family members relax mentally (The American National Red Cross, 2021).
How cross border cartels have affected NGOs partnership with Security Agencies
The partnership of NGOs with the government in the United States-Mexico border is not strong in that the NGOs are seen as if they are the ones aiding drug traffickers and terrorists in entering the United States. The organized crimes and corruption in the borders is one factor that is attributed with NGOs activities (PENA A, 2021). Although, the NGOs may not have a hand in these crimes the people they help thinking they are victims of disasters are the ones who bring drugs like heroin, cocaine and marijuana in the United States, as well as aiding illegal migrants.
The cartels of gangs in this border do work with the natives, the rogue police officers and NGOs. The dollars they collect from their illegal activities is shared among these groups. Though, the Mexico administration seems to be working to eliminate these cartels, the rot of crime is in their police service. This is because when innocent people are killed by these cartels justice is not served and those who seek justice are still pursued by these gangs. The gangs now want all the people looking for a way to get into U.S. to pass through them. They demand for money to aid safe migration to illegal migrants but in reality they do not help them (Suárez K, 2021).
