Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice

Writer and the situation concerning the reading

Jane Austen is the author of the novel pride and prejudice that is set in rural England in the beginning of the 19th century. The novel is about romance and the writer intends to pass the message of pride and prejudice through the characters in the novel.

Genre of the readings

The piece of art under review is pride and prejudice which is a romantic book by Jane Austen. The author wrote the piece to highlight the issues of class divisions that prevailed in England society whereby the rich could not easily associate with the poor. The characters in the novel are represented as either affluent or poor whereby there is a clash between the two classes. The author also writes to show the prejudice against women where the society expects women to behave in a certain way, but no such standards are expected of men.

Examples demonstrating key ideas

Jane Austen main theme is to bring about pride that is brought about by affluence and prejudice, which is about women position in the society. In the readings, the Bingley and the Darcy’s represents the upper class while the Bennet’s are the middle class who are treated as socially inferior. The chapter starts with Elizabeth and the Gardiners arriving at the Pemberley estate where Darcy lives. When Darcy suddenly appears, treats Elizabeth very warmly, which amazes Darcy’s aunt and uncle. They are prejudiced against Elizabeth and cannot help wonder why Darcy is so cordial and genial to people who are socially inferior to them. Miss darcy is not proud when his Darcy calls on Elizabeth and the Gardiner’s the next day to introduce Elizabeth to his sister and Bingley. This encounter reinforces the theme of pride. The chapter also highlights the theme of prejudice whereby Elizabeth has a negative attitude towards Darcy. Elizabeth believes that Darcy is bad man as she had been convinced by Wickham that Darcy denied him inheritance. Nonetheless, her prejudice is written off when Darcy’s housekeeper praises him calling him the 'He is the best landlord, and the best master that ever lived (Austen, 1).’

Impact of the reading in personal and professional life

The reading impacted me by provoking me to think about the current society. Nothing much has changed in society in regards to pride and prejudice. Although the novel was written in 1813, the theme is still relevant today. Regarding class, some people believe that they cannot get married to middle or people from needy backgrounds. In terms of prejudice against women and the place of women in society, nothing much has changed since women are expected to behave in certain ways such as wedding officially and not inherit property. In most societies, women are not allowed to inherit or even own property. The theme of pride and prejudice is very relevant in my personal and professional life whereby I need to treat people with respect and dignity, regardless of their economic position.
