Lessons learnt from 9/11 attack

The background of 9/11 attack

The historic American domestic terror attack occurred on September 11, 2001. The attack was organized by extremists who were associated with the Al-Qaida terror group. But, the fact is those terrorist had lived in the nation for more than a month. Some had even enrolled themselves in flying classes without being detected by responsible security agencies. The attack left more than 3,000 people dead. After the attack, the department of Homeland Security was established to deal with domestic security issues, border security, disaster and relief prevention and immigration and customs control (History.com Editors, 2018).

Lessons learnt from 9/11 attack

The 9/11 attack caught the nation unprepared. No one could think such an attack could happen on American soil. The attention of the security agencies like FBI, CIA and NSA was on what was going on in the world (PBS, 2009). The nation had encountered dozens of threat but nothing was done. Since the attacks were thought to be carried outside U.S. borders, the terrorist seized that opportunity to plan their acts within the borders of the United States without being detected.

The attack clearly showed that the security agencies were not well coordinated. The roles were not well defined. The sharing of information between the agencies was minimal if it existed. The supremacy battles within the agencies hindered sharing of intelligence information (PBS, 2009). Why do CIA and FBI collect intelligence information if it cannot share it with relevant authorities?

After the attack the Americans showed unity by volunteering and making a contribution to help the affected, businesses donated the required medical supplies and other items. The medical professionals were on the ground ready to help. The unity showed the unwavering spirit of the Americans.

Roles of the DNI

The roles of Director of National Intelligence includes; directing and overseeing the implementation of national intelligence programs and advising the Homeland Security Council in all matters relating to domestic security (Office of the Director of National Intelligence, n.d.). The DNI is responsible of ensuring all the domestic intelligence information gathered by the intelligence agencies like FBI and CIA is acted on. This includes thwarting terror attacks before they are carried out.
