HRM Policies on Diversity

Diversity should not be taken as something done to meet the law requirements or appeal to the outside world. It should be done with a mind to make the workplace better, improve customer service and the organization bottom-line.

The way other processes like production are effective and efficient likewise diversity should be made to work for the success of the firm. An organization should not just hire people from different races, gender, religion among other characteristics just to be said to value diversity, but, the diverse ideas and perspectives need to be exploited.

I have been in organizations with employees from different backgrounds but only a given race or gender ideas are put in use. Diversity is not about engaging people with different backgrounds but putting their differences together for the benefit of the firm. I think a policy should be put in place that ensures all employees ideas are valued and put in use. Failure to do that makes best minds to leave an organization.

Many diversity programs established within organizations fail because of lack of an employee or a team dedicated to ensure diversity programs are implemented. Why do we lack Chief Diversity Officer in organizations? If a firm cannot function well without CIO or CFO or chief ethics officer, likewise eliminating presence of a team to ensure diversity is observed makes diversity not to be meaningful to firms.

Diversity programs should have an element of measurable implementation. There should be a person reporting regularly about promotions, recognitions and increase in pay within an organization in terms of diversity.
