Digital assets are individual files of digital content. This includes; text documents, images, audio, and video files.
A file is a unit of digital data that has an individual name. Ms Word documents, JPEGs, and PDFs are examples of digital assets.
Why Data Management is Essential;
1. A system for organizing your digital assets can help you be more efficient and more productive with your time.
2. Organizing digital assets helps you manage space on your hard drives and networks.
3. You can effectively collaborate with others.
When you have a system for organizing files and folders, you can find your information quickly. This increased efficiency gives you more time to spend on other tasks.
A smartphone has much less storage space than either a desktop or laptop computer, so it’s a good idea to periodically transfer large data files, like photos or videos, from one to the other.
All computers have some form of internal storage.Internal storage is in the form of a hard disk drive, or hard drive.
Computers, like laptops, more often have a solid-state drive (SSD). The solid-state drive uses flash memory rather than a spinning disk, which makes it quicker, more reliable, and more energy efficient.
Digital assets can be saved on the;
1. Internal storage.
2. External storage.
3. Network Storage.
4. Cloud storage
Internal Storage
Saving a file on the Desktop or in the Downloads or Documents folders means that the file is saved to their computer’s internal storage.
Network Storage
It is advisable to store content on a computer network. Network storage does the following;
1. Allows the company’s system administrators to manage files and back them up properly.
2. Allows other authorized individuals to open files, so everyone has access to the information they need.
3. Allows administrators to lock files that shouldn’t be changed, and to find previous versions of files that have been changed
4. Allows company administrators to have permanent access to files.

Internal Storage
Saving a file on the Desktop or in the Downloads or Documents folders means that the file is saved to their computer’s internal storage.
Whether that internal storage is a hard disk or a solid-state drive, this process is still often known as “saving to the hard drive” or “saving locally.”
External storage
External storage devices back files up or transfer them from one computer to another.
External storage devices back files up or transfer them from one computer to another.
Examples of external storage devices are; flash disks, CD, DVD, memory cards and external disks (hand drive).
An external hard drive attaches to your computer with a cable; some also have wireless capability, which allows you to save data to the hard drive without physically connecting to it.
External hard drives provide extra storage for large amounts of data. They are often used to store an extra, “backup” copy of files that are also stored elsewhere.
External storage devices will be visible in your File Explorer as removable disk after you connect them to your computer.
You can access File Explorer by clicking the folder icon in the Taskbar, and then clicking This PC to see your internal and external storage options.

Some cloud storage are available through stand-alone services such as Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud.
Other online storage are available as part of cloud-computing services, which include storage while also giving you access to web-based applications like; Google Slides, Google Docs and Google Sheets.
Advantages of Cloud Storage
1. Able to access files from any device with an internet connection. This is an advantage that offers users greater flexibility and mobility.
2. Latest changes will be up to date.
3. Can work from different digital devices: laptop, phone, or tablet.
Disadvantages of the Cloud Storage
1. Possibility of data exposure if cloud servers are hacked.
2. Must have an internet connection to access and edit files.
3. Possibly unable to access files if there are problems with cloud servers.

Note: Email account is a form of cloud storage that come with free access to online storage space, giving you a great place to back up important files and documents. Even if your email account does not come with extra storage, email can still be an extremely helpful way to back up and store smaller files and attachments, like receipts, important messages, CV, or reports.
It’s important to know a computer’s default settings for saving files. Operating systems, browsers, and applications have specific locations they automatically save file downloads to, unless you select another location.
Note: It’s possible to customise these default storage locations to better suit your needs.
The Save As options in programs like Microsoft Word can help specify your file’s name and storage location.
