The KCSE for this year is here with us. We expect secondary schools to churn out thousands of school leavers. But, which plans are parents having with these students who will be spilled in our villages and towns? In most cases, the parents are anticipating to be helped with household chores. From the time these students will leave school to the time KCSE results will be out, many of these students will be idlers. But is this what they should be?
The parents with sons and or daughters who are leaving form four should be keen with their children when they will alive home having completed KCSE exams. Apart from allocating them household chores, the parents should enroll these kids to short courses of two months that will help them in the future. For example, computer classes, driving classes, cake baking and so forth. These courses in addition to giving kids skills they also open their eyes.
For the last 3 years I have been interacting with people who have left form four every day. And, I have come to know these small courses helps the students to know the world around them. For example, it is through computer classes students gets to know how to apply colleges, helb, cyber conmen and so many things that help them if they join college or university. Parents who do not take their children to these small courses makes their children suffer. It is not one student who is in university or college who struggles with operating a computer. Nowadays it is mandatory for people to have computer certificates while applying for a job, if one fails to learn it after form four it means he or she will have to create time to learn it after college or university.
My advice is let children learn these small courses. They are not meant for people who will further their education or those who will not join college or university. They are good for opening the minds. Some can even help them make a living, remember we are in Kenya and college or university education does not guarantee anyone a job.
