Why C+ and B- Mean Grades frustrates

Did you or your child get a grade that qualifies entry to a public university? That is, do you or your kid have a C+ and above? If yes, this is now the time to manage your expectations and be real. Having a mean grade of C+ and above comes with other challenges which many form 4 leavers and their parents do not understand, and that is what we want to iron here.

Having a C+ and above does not mean one will have access to the course one dreams of. This means thousands of these C+ and above holders will pursue courses that are not what they want in life. For example, there is a C+ and above holder who is thinking he or she will study law or medicine and yet the student will end up studying botany or criminology. What dictates what one studies in the university is the mean grade, cluster points and ones dreams. The last factor can be altered by the first two; mean grade and cluster points.

The cluster points are where expectations are frustrated. Allow me to use two subjects, mathematics and English, to explain this area. Majority of the C+ and B- holders scores poorly in these two subjects. It’s possible to find someone with mean grade of B- but has a D in either English or Mathematics. That grade D becomes the source of frustrations. For example, last year I met around five people who had C+ and above who wanted to pursue a Bachelor of education degree but they had a D plain in Mathematics and they did not qualify for that course.

The most courses offered in the universities are business oriented. Take an example of a student who want to pursue Bachelor of Commerce with a mind of becoming an accountant, this student will need to have CPA from KASNEB. For one to study CPA the requirements are mean grade of C+ with C+ in both English and Mathematics. This means a student can have a chance to pursue a degree in business related field and be frustrated later in life. It is good to note that student pursuing accounts degree courses are supposed to study CPA concurrently.
