Where do all the students who finish form 4 go? First, let us accept ourselves and say we do not perform well in exams (i.e. not many of us score university grades.). But, that should not limit us in pursuing our academic dreams. By the way we have people with good grades, though not qualified for university education, who can pursue good diplomas than some degrees!
We have a tradition whereby form 4 leavers think that form 4 is the end of learning. We have people who believe their parents cannot afford college fees. But, every student who has gone through high school is also able to join college.
Most college fee for a diploma is around ksh58,000/= per year (I am using Kabete technical 2021 fee structure in this case) and for KMTC it is ksh80,000/= for a certificate course. This amount does not include accommodation which includes housing and food.
What our form 4 leavers need to know is that they can raise this amount. They only need to keep checking KUCCPS (https://students.kuccps.net/) and KMTC website to apply the colleges admission. When choosing the college if the student does not have financial power to afford cost of living in big towns, let the student consider schools in remote areas where the cost of living is affordable (na mtu achague course anaweza jiajiri).
Once, one gets the admission letter, he or she should apply for helb loan. College students pursuing diploma courses mostly are given ksh40,000/= per year. One can also apply for bursaries and I am sure CDF and county bursaries can provide 10k per year. That is equal to 50k. The 8k and accommodation is what is left to the parent to cater for a whole year. And who knows, at times CDF and county can give more than that 10k.
So, every person willing to further his or her education the door is open for all. One only need to hustle for the entry amount which in most cases is ksh20,000/=.
