How to register a KRA PIN 2024

 A KRA PIN is required when:

  1. When opening a bank account
  2. Buying properties like land and motor vehicles
  3. When applying HELB loan
  4. When applying for electricity connection
  5. When registering for a driving course
  6. When applying a job that has a taxable pay, etc.
Step 1

Go to the itax system on https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/ and you will be directed to the below page.


Step 2

On the above page click REGISTER or click here on the New PIN Registration as shown below


Step 3

Once you click REGISTER on the above step you are directed to the below page.


On the above page on Taxpayer Type select individual and on mode of registration select online form as shown below and then click Next


Step 4

Once you click next on the above page you will land on the below page


On the above page click Kenyan on citizenship (Note one clicking Kenyan you are provided with space to enter your id number and date of birth as shown below), then on employee profession select as appropriate. For example, in this case the person applying the PIN is a farmer and so I have selected as shown below.


On the above page enter your national id number (of the person who want the pin) and date of birth, and then click on the page, and other details like your individual data, fathers details and mother details will populate themselves as shown below


Scroll down the above page and enter you physical address, postal address, mobile number and email as shown below


When you input email the below "Send OTP" pop up appears, click ok.


When you click OK on the above step note the Send OTP icon and One Time Password space or slot which appears as shown below


Click send OTP (One time time password will be sent to your email), also ensure alternate address, bank account details, director and tributary bonds questions all answers are No (unless you want to provide those details which are not necessary).

Go to your email (the one you have provided above) and get the one time password as shown below.


In this case the code is 1944. This is the code you enter on the One time password space or slot, and click Next at the bottom of the page. You will be directed to the below page.


On the above page you choose the tax obligation the owner of the KRA PIN will be filing. In this case the pin is for an individual, so we choose Income Tax Resident and the registration date is the date the pin is being registered as shown below.


On the above page click Next and you will be directed to the below page.


On the above page you declare the source of income. Ensure all the answers of Employment income, Business income and rental income are NO as shown below.


On the above page click Next and you will land on the below page


On the above page you enter the result of the arithmetic question at the bottom of the page as shown below


On the above page click Submit and the below pop up will appear


On the above page the pop up want to confirm the email you have provided, click OK and another pop up appears as shown below


The above pop up want to confirm that you are ready to submit the data you have provided and get the KRA pin. Click OK and you are directed to the below page.


On the above page click where it is written click here to download PIN Certificate and a pin will download to your download folder named receipt. Open it as shown below


We are done! That is the KRA PIN.

NB: Once the KRA PIN is registered a copy of it is sent to the email as shown below. The email also contain the password of login to the itax system when filing returns. The owner of this pin will now start to file returns next year 2023.
