How to File Rental Income Tax

 Step 1

Go to itax on https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/ as shown below


On the above page enter your KRA PIN and click continue and will be be directed to the below page


On the above page enter your itax password and complete the security stamp and then click login. You will be directed to the below page


Step 2

Once you have logged in as shown above, go to Returns as shown below


On the above page click File Return on the drop down menu. You will be directed to the below page


On the above page, on Tax Obligation select Income Tax - Rent Income as shown below


Once you have selected Income Tax Rent Income on the above page click next and you will be directed to the below page


Step 3

On the above page of importance is the Return Period From and Return Period To. This shows the month being taken into account. It is supposed to be last month, so if one is filing Return in the month of February it is for the rent paid for the month of January. On the above page click next and you will be directed to the below page.


On the above page enter the Total number of properties and Total Rental income as shown below.


On the above page click submit and you will be directed to the below page


On the above page click Download Return Receipt, go to your download folder and get it as shown below


That is how Monthly Rental Income return is filed.

Points to note
  1. This return is filed by landlords with rental income above 24,000/= per month and below 15 million per year
  2. The tax is 8% of the collected tax
  3. the return is submitted before the 20th of the following month.
